The black swan serves as a powerful symbol of how a non-human species can become emblematic of a particular place and its people. For tens of thousands of years, the Noongar people of southwest Australia have coexisted with the black swan, or maali, which holds a significant place in their Dreamtime traditions.
When Europeans first explored the river known to the Noongar as Derbarl Yerrigan, they encountered the black swan and quickly named the waterway the Swan River. The first British settlement on Australia’s west coast was called the Swan River Colony, and the black swan was almost immediately adopted as a symbol of the region.
