Carmen Tyrer
Carmen Tyrer is a multidisciplinary artist. Her love for wool started early in her life while living in Chile. She comes from a family of knitters. Felting took her interest and joined Feltwest to learn how to felt in 2006.
Carmen prepares and washes her fleeces, dyes, spins, felts and knits with her yarns. Most of the commercial wool she uses in her felting are from the highest quality and from Western Australia. The ultrafine fleeces are sourced from Casalana Wool Farm in Serpentine, WA, where she gets her ultrafine merino wool of 13,3 to 15.5 microns, white or coloured. Ultrafine wool resists felting because of its extreme thin section. Carmen managed to felt it after repeated efforts and trials. Her love for colour and texture saw her developing her “Painterly Felting” technique. She has won awards with felted artworks. Perth Royal Show, twice, Ellenbrook Arts Award, Major Prize in 2023. Has participated in several group exhibitions and has been finalist in various Arts Awards.
Felting workshops are held at her home-studio in Waroona, WA. Her Studio is set up as part working place where Carmen does her felting, sewing, cold porcelain, and Euclay. Other area of the house has her fleeces and spinning wheels, one room is her painting room and under the verandah is the ceramics studio.
Carmen encourages people to visit her studio but make an appointment previously. She has a gallery where her works in a variety of mediums are on exhibition. Almost 30 masks of a Latin-American origin are exhibited attached to the front of her house.
Carmen is the creator of Euclay, an air-dried clay made with dried eucalyptus leaves. The Artisans Store has started stocking works in Euclay by Artist Jennifer Miller and Carmen as well.
