Hand Felted – Nuno Felt Shawl by Carmen Tyrer.
This shawl was felted over a layer of almost translucent silk fabric called Organza.
Wool for felting was Superfine Merino wool from Australian sheep.
Fibres of Wild Indian Silk used as decoration (light brown in colour) and carbonised bamboo fibres are the dark grey bands across the shawl.
Mulberry Silk fibres used in the surface decoration (very white and lustrous).
For embellishment Carmen used Fresh Water Pearls and stitching done with a unique American made thread (grey colour) and French Cotton embroidery thread.
All done by hand.
Design is unique. No two are the same.
Mulberry Silk is the finest silk fibre obtained from the silk cocoons raised on Mulberry Tree leaves.
Wild Indian Silk is harvested from the Forests of India and the cocoon size grows close to 8cm long and 3cm at its widest.
Its brownish/grey in colour and produces thicker and brown colour silk fibres.
