Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most significant cultural landmarks, with a history deeply tied to the state’s early development. As the largest and most intact convict-built structure in Western Australia, it played a crucial role for nearly 140 years.

In 2010, Fremantle Prison became the first building in Western Australia to be listed as a World Heritage site, recognized alongside other Australian Convict Sites. It’s also listed on the National Heritage List, the State Register of Heritage Places, and is part of Fremantle’s West End Conservation Area.

Decommissioned as a maximum-security prison in 1991, Fremantle Prison has since become a popular tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each year to explore its history.
