Australian opal is mostly mined from the Great Artesian Basin in Australia. It is praised for its rainbow colours with is called ‘play of colour’ which is a refraction of light within the stone. every stone will be different as the amount of play on colour shown can not be replicated, so you are guaranteed to have a unique piece. it should be treated carefully as the hardness of the stone is 5-6 on the Mohs harness scale meaning it should stay way from harsh temperature changes, beaches and impact activities such as gardening because it can damage the opal.
