Bring Back the Annual Westend Weekender at Fremantle International Street Arts Festival

Freo Council cancels the 8th annual Easter Westend Weekender

The City of Fremantle has once again dealt a detrimental blow to the local business community.

The council is denying the High Street businesses the opportunity to conduct their 8th annual street market in conjunction with the International Street Arts Festival. Council’s decision has left many business owners feeling frustrated and alienated.

The Westend Weekender Market, a cherished part of the Fremantle International Street Arts Festival, has been a beacon of vibrancy and community spirit in our city. Over the Easter long weekend, it supports local businesses and creates an atmosphere that draws foot traffic past shop front windows in a street that would otherwise be deserted. It is more than just a market; it’s an integral part of our community fabric.

However, this beloved event has been discontinued. Its absence is felt deeply by many residents and business owners alike. The Westend businesses rely on this event to boost their sales and visibility during what would normally be quiet times. Without it, they are left struggling to attract customers.

Moreover, the festival also serves as a platform for local artists to showcase their talents and contribute to Fremantle’s vibrant arts scene. According to City of Fremantle data from previous years, the festival attracts thousands of visitors each year who come not only for shopping but also for entertainment.

The discontinuation of the Westend Weekender not only impacts our economy but also diminishes our cultural heritage and sense of community spirit. We urge City Council officials to reconsider their decision and reinstate this important event.

City of Fremantle response to the cancellation is lack of time, resources and budget as this money needs to go to International and national artists, in particular to fund there ever increasing airfares. We have continually argued that the street market costs council nothing, as the street closure on High Street, between Market and Pakenham will be in place irrespective of whether the market proceeds or not due to the imposing and sprawling presence of the National Hotel which poses a significant hindrance to foot traffic – ultimately transforming both High St and the Westend into a desolate ghost town. The market is organised by local businesses so doesn’t require any resources from council. Council has also testified at the latest Council meeting that there is no local appetite from local businesses or the community to run the market. We believe otherwise, help us show Council there research is incorrect.

Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting local businesses, fostering artistic talent, preserving cultural heritage or simply enjoying vibrant street festivals like we do! Together we can bring back the annual Westend Weekender at Fremantle International Street Arts Festival!
