Figurative bird series multi piece casting in recycled paper, individually assembled and detailed with resin, timber, glass and steel.

The bird series were created as totems after the loss of our home and my studio during the Wooroloo bushfire. After the rebuild I needed to reintroduce myself to the surviving wildlife and honour their loss so I created a garden of birds for my new studio. These pieces are taken as castings from my bird garden, each birds sit upon a branch section salvaged from the fire. Please note these sculptures are not designed for external display.

From his secluded hilltop studio, Western Australia sculptor and visual storyteller, Andrew Taylor brings to life a tender world of whimsical charters through drawings and situational sculptures.

“My work is driven by emotion and interplay, with simple characters that playfully inhabit a slightly skewed world.

I take inspiration from literacy characters such as Don Quixote and Hamlet set within a contemporary context.

The works capture intimate glimpses, providing the viewer an opportunity to discover and imagine through reflection of their own experience.”

The drawing begins the sculptural process providing scale, composition and an idea of general aesthetic. From a 1:1 scale drawing, measurements are taken as a guide to the completed piece.

Sculptures are created by two methods, original chalk resin, steel, timber and paper clay carvings and limited edition composite castings, individually hand detailed and embellished. The original paper sketch is used in the paper clay.
