John has developed a process where paper is stretched over a ‘last’ to form the lampshade. All the wooden elements are designed and made by John. The Love Lamp range incorporates a similar process using bamboo hoops with exposed turn buckles. The furniture (wooden elements) fit together with high quality stainless steel fixtures. The resulting product is robust and durable and designed to outlive the maker.
Innovative Lamp Design
The Love Lamp has many innovations and is a culmination of years of testing and development. John has re-purposed darning hoops to create the barrel with lovely exposed turnbuckles. All wooden elements, including the base, have been designed and made by John.
The Love Lamp comes with a paper shade and a base which can be separated in order to change colour filters. In this way one can change the personality of the lamp. This new range of lamps includes six Western Australian inspired designs designed to be appreciated in ambient and low light situations.
In 2019, he created a collection of ink illustrations, exhibited at the Gallows Gallery in Mosman Park. Subsequently, based on these illustrations, he has developed a process where paper is stretched over a pipe to form a lampshade. The Love Lamp range incorporates a similar process using bamboo hoops.
Designed to highlight the beauty of illuminated canvas paper, the lamp’s artistry can also be appreciated with or without illumination.
John has worked as a graphic designer and art director for many years. Working mainly with large corporations with a focus on branding and visual communications. In recent years he has worked as an art teacher. However, unable to continue teaching due to ill health. After rehabilitation, he shifted his focus away from teaching and became interested in Lamp making as a traditional art-form in China and Japan. Today, small family run factories continue to make traditional lanterns and lamps – he feels part of this tradition.
Lamp Design and Process
The Lamps are painted or block stamped onto canvas paper. The design is outlined onto canvas paper with a laser machine. The outlines are coloured with brush or stamped. The paper is then placed on the laser for cutting. Bamboo hoops are clamped to the paper to form the lamp shade. Wooden elements are fitted to complete the lamp. Finally the LED globe is attached to the wooden base. Each lamp comes with green, yellow and red filters.
Special orders can be arranged when requested. John can create a bespoke design with colours to suit your home. A much wider range of lamps, including larger works, is available to be seen at his studio. Just contact us to discuss the possibilities.
The lamp is powered by a 7W LED ceiling down-light with a 30,000 hour operating life – equivalent more than 1,400 days usage. With regular use the lamp will last many years without replacement. The lamp can be adjusted at the base of the housing for 600lm, 660lm or 640lm. The lamp is suitable for Australian and New Zealand power points.
The base is made from 6mm high density fibreboard with oak lamination and a wax finish. The base is incredibly strong and forms a solid structure for the lamp. The top elements are of 3.4mm Luann Pine with a dark wood stain and varnish. The base and the top elements are bolted together with stainless steel bolts and nuts.
