This little cutie trio of flowering red gums may be small but it leaps off the beige toned aluminum panel. There are so many colourful tones in the shell, pollen and talons of a gum blossom I thought to best enhance these colours by pairing the subject against an earthy neutral backdrop.

I paint on commercial canvas boards, or on MDF or masonite primed with two coats of acrylic gesso. I prefer the MDF as it provides a solid base.

I lay paint on, working from the sky and horizon to the foreground, blending by painting wet on wet. I constantly go back over the evolving work as it dries to build the effect and colour I’m trying to achieve.

I like to complete a painting in one sitting because acrylics dry quickly; I usually spend the most part of a day, adding final touches when the painting has partly dried and become ‘tacky’, but there have been occasions where I will spend an extra day, going back over a painting.

I don’t wash my brushes often, instead wiping excess paint onto areas of the canvas that I have yet to cover. This allows old colours to be intermingled with new as I work my way down the picture, helping with colour coordination and to harmonize the picture.
