Belgin Lace Original Painting by Demi McLeod
Dimensions: approx. 81cm x 81 cm.
Mixed media on canvas.
Framed.
The Gilded Cage series is inspired by Demi McLeod’s travels, particularly to Florence, where religious icons shimmer with gold and seem to emit their own gentle light. She explores the luminous quality of gold that makes a painting feel alive from within.
These works experiment with layers of gold leaf, antique Belgian lace, moulding paste, translucent inks, and transparent oil glazes to create shifting depth and lustre. In this series, gold becomes both halo and boundary — a symbol of enlightenment, strength, and spiritual longing, yet also the shimmering bars of a gilded cage.
Belgian Lace highlights the delicacy and heritage of lace as both material and metaphor. Gilded and layered within glowing surfaces, it celebrates craftsmanship and fragility — a tribute to beauty preserved through time and light.
