Necklace of Two Colours of Natural Amber by Galina Rozanova.
This distinctive necklace made of high quality natural amber pieces is designed to draw the eye, particularly when accompanying a dark or light coloured outfit. The darker stones are highlighted best against a light background whilst the light coloured stones are enhanced by a dark colour. The arrangement is alternating bands of light and dark pieces separated by small transparent glass beads. Each piece has been carefully matched to its companions in terms of size, colour and opacity.
The length is set at approx. 450 mm and it weighs 80 g. It is secured by an amber clasp.
The necklace was made by local Perth artist, Galina Rozanova using amber sourced from the Baltic States. Galina has been making beaded jewellery for 25 years and has won many prestigious awards.
Amber is the fossilised remnant of sap from ancient pine trees and exhibits warm golden coloured highlights in natural light. It hardens with age after burial. The Vikings believed that it was formed from the tears of the goddess Freya. Opaque pieces are older and hence more valuable, but there is also a premium paid for pieces containing fossilised insects. Amber is said to have healing properties against ailments such as asthma, catarrh, chest pains coughs and earache. It is also said to mitigate depression.
